My first half marathon done
After nearly 12 months of training and a few setbacks, I completed my first half marathon.
I thought I had blown it at mile 9 when cramps slowed me to a walking pace.
I told myself I had blown it and my preparation was the cause of it.
I convinced myself that I was going to miss out on my goal of 1 hour 50 minutes completion time.
I battled with myself to focus on the importance of finishing and the achievement of completing my first half.
I told myself I could still finish the race and be happy with this at least.
Eventually, the cramping wore off and I put on my favorite motivational clip to get myself going again;

I began to build up speed again and gain momentum.
I splashed myself with every drop of water I could at the remaining water stations to cool off in the heat.
I began to catch up with and pass a few people who were slowing down.
I got to the final mile and with the cramps gone I pushed for home.
I saw the finish line up ahead and saw my finish time.
My time was 1.44, a very nice surprise, and my hard work had paid off.
I met my partner Lex who made my day by waiting for me at the finish line.
I learned a lot about myself over the course of this run.
The importance of not giving up and how special it is to share the good times with people you love.
I don’t love running but what I do love is the feeling of completion I get from proving my inner critic wrong.
My next goal is to improve this 1 hour 44 minute time by 5% down to 1 hour 39 minutes – let’s see how it goes…
